BONGANI MAGATYANA

Rooted in the music of the Old Apostolic Church, Bongani loves sharing Xhosa traditions, including ritual songs and wedding songs. He is also an active composer, bringing together Xhosa traditional singing styles with an electric sense of harmony. His song Nongqawuse, composed when Bongani was in high school in the village of Umtata, is so well known in South Africa that many people think it must be an old song. Since 2013, he has collaborated with Village Harmony, an international music organization, teaching and co-leading camps and workshops globally. He recently founded the Khayelitsha Children’s Choir.
